Brilliant turn out at the Rathbone Studio to hear the talk by historian and Della Robbia expert Peter Hyland.

Peter’s talk was a real insight into Charles Collins, one of the most productive artists of the Della Robbia pottery, who lived in Birkenhead.

Thank you to Peter for his talk, it was enjoyed by everyone. Very interesting and informative.

Behind the scenes of Birkenhead’s Della Robbia pottery

The Rathbone Studio is to host a talk by historian and Della Robbia expert Peter Hyland.

Peter’s talk will be a real insight into one of the most productive artists of the Della Robbia pottery, who lived in Birkenhead and worked at the pottery for most of time it was in business.

Peter Hyland says “The illustrated talk will describe the life and career, and many ups and downs, of one of the most prolific and inventive artists at the Della Robbia Pottery based on his frank memoirs and including one or two details previously unpublished.”

The Della Robbia pottery was opened in 1894 by Harold Rathbone and he employed many people who would otherwise have found difficulty in getting employment. He encouraged his workers to be artistic and create their own designs, because of this the diversity and range of pottery produced is vast.

The Della Robbia pottery’s design and sculptural workshops were on the site of the Rathbone Studio which is again a pottery and gallery. The main part of the Della Robbia pottery was round the corner at 2a Price Street, where the kiln was housed. It must have been an unusual sight to see the pots being carried on boards from one building to the other for the different procedures to be completed.

The talk ‘Behind the Scenes’ will be on Monday 4 July at 2.00pm at the Rathbone Studio, 28 Argyle Street, Birkenhead, CH41 6AE.

Anyone who wishes to bring their own piece of Della Robbia will also be treated to the story behind their ware.

Behind the Scenes at the Rathbone Studio

Great feature on the 'Remembering Eleanor Rathbone' website supporting the exhibition at the Rathbone Studio.

During the Wirral Open Studio tour on Saturday 11 June and Sunday 12 June, the Rathbone Studio is opening its doors to its pottery studio for visitor to go behind the scenes. Janet will be demonstrating the pottery process to create her sculptural pieces. People will also be encouraged to have a go and try some of the pottery techniques themselves.

The artists also exhibiting their work at the Rathbone Studio this year are Linda Evans, whose abstract paintings and felt paintings are exhibited throughout the Northwest and Wales. Jean Maskell will be exhibiting her poetry, pottery and paintings that have very strong social messages, and have been exhibited at many galleries in the Wirral including the Williamson Art Gallery. A new comer to the Wirral Open Studio tour this year is Anita Varey, who runs her own watercolour workshops in Moreton. Anita will be also holding watercolour demonstrations over the Open weekend.

Behind the Scenes is arranged in conjunction with the Wirral Open Studio tour, which is an annual showcase of work by artists in the Wirral. Wirral Open Studio tour is on Saturday 11 June between 10.00 - 5.00 and on Sunday 12 June 11.00 – 5.00. The pottery demonstrations start at 1pm on the Saturday and at 11am on the Sunday.
